Hey again Mark. When I was younger, I was a big certainty, kinda concrete thinking person. But what do they say, the more you know, the less you know! I heard a ernest follower of Christ remark once, "I would have this theology of God in my nice bucket, but then God would come along and kick it over!'
In a perfect world, we're all evolving and I'm glad to hear that you are. Oh, how little we actually know!
I absolutely love your quote about Theology, God and the Bucket. For anyone with an open mind, that's really fertile ground. Thanks again for your thought provoking comments.
3. I think I hike like both you and your wife. :-)
4. It’s amazing how long we Western humans have thought about a singular creator, though singularity takes so much willful denial to see. The twins and four directions of indigenous North American tradition and the Christian trinitarian theology at least imagine an interconnected cosmos made by a mind that’s interconnected “all the way down.” To me, this is more plausible, but it’s just guesswork.
5. I won’t spread any rumors about skinny dippers on the Gardner River. Montana keeps its secrets.
I am so highly disorganized. I was just going through some 800 plus emails and noticed your comment which I hadn't even acknowledged - Sorry. We had a fill-in minister preach at our UCC church yesterday and my wife especially was in heaven listening to him make the case that God is in each of us, and that the heaven thing is over-simplified. I would agree an interconnected cosmos makes sense and would add that to personify God is to simplify that which is incomprehensible. I'm looking forward to reading a book on my pile written by a guy named Linde who has been studying native American tribes here in Wisconsin. I do love the concept of being connected with nature and each other. Doing our own separate thing hasn't been working out too well. Happy Thanksgiving, stay well Tara.
No worries, Mark! 😂 It's funny how some people are comfortable with incomprehensibility, and others want a concrete image, human or otherwise. May we all enjoy our Thursday meal. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your wife.
I really like A.L's writing. She's filled with good quirk, and what world doesn't need more of that.
Over the years, I've been trying so hard to hike more like my wife, but I am so goal oriented. I admire people who can strike a balance, unless I'm with them and trying to get somewhere (LOL)
I wasn't familiar with the "twins and four directions" but I will have to check into it. The concept of connection "all the way down" resonates with me. Historically we've spent so much effort trying to keep divinity and us and nature as separate entities. I'm not sure that's working well.
The trinity has always baffled me but thinking of it as some deity and then all the way down, gives me another way to look at it.
Jesus, to my recollection , said something like - "The kingdom of God is within you." That would be pretty interconnected.
As always I appreciate your thoughts - have a great weekend

1. Amen!
2. I also think Lamott nailed it with that title.
