You can always get on the road with your bike to find your next connections too. I recall you made a few good ones on at least one of your long rides.

Congrats on one year. I’m not too far behind you.

Thanks Kim for the "congrats" and all of your support since we both met here on Substack. . . even if I am one pedal ahead of you. I've just resumed using my bicycle trainer in the basement and am looking forward to getting back in the saddle this spring. It truly is a great way to take in beauty and connect on many levels.

I look forward to watching your writing blossom in the new year ahead.

I have my bike and trainer in the basement. I just need to put them together! 😂

Do you use zwift? My friend is planning to set me up but like you I’d much prefer to ride outside. So, jury is still out on the “gaming” of the ride.

Hi Kim,

It's good to see that you're trying to fill the gaps between spring and fall trips on the road. I've been doing various regimens at gyms for a couple decades now and the one thing I've learned is that no form of exercise keeps me in good shape to ride a bicycle as well as riding a bicycle. Cycling in my basement certainly is not nearly as gratifying but for me there's music and Spanish DVD's. So, that's my long-winded way of encouraging you to get that trainer spinning!

I'm not familiar with "zwift," but I use and like "Map My Ride" when I'm on my road bike outside. Regarding any gaming of the ride, I would say - whatever gets you on the trainer the most consistently is the best approach for you - making it fun is all good.

You have to have a smart trainer to use Zwift, and then it hooks up to your computer/laptop/TV and you can literally ride with others on different routes you choose. So, in other words, you can ride with people who live anywhere in the world. Maybe one day we can do a virtual ride together in the colder winter months if you ever do stumble across it.

How very cool, and it definitely would add an attractive social component to what at least for me is usually a solo venture. Though it would certainly be fun to join you for the virtual ride, I've gotta wait for my ship to come in before I can transition to a smart trainer. I just have a magnetic resistance cyclops trainer currently.

:) I got my smart trainer a couple of years ago and used it all of twice. It's a bit too smart for me! I have the same trainer as you which I prefer. Put bike on, pedal. Easy peasy. I'm being encouraged to use my space ship trainer by a couple of people, but so far haven't managed to figure out the set up. Today's the day though. It's rainy here, so I'm committed to stay in the basement until I get it figured out. At least mostly! Here's to sunnier days ahead where we can get on the open roads.
