I love music. According to “Headphones Addict”, that makes me part of the 62% of Americans that consider themselves music lovers or fanatics. FYI - only South Africa surpassed our numbers at 75%. As with every one of us, I have my likes and dislikes, but these can so often turn into blind spots where I miss bright gems in the world of music. Case in point, I’ve never had a particular interest in “pop music” per se, but that certainly softens as it becomes closer to pop rock. Sarah Bareilles is a prime example and I really connect with her music on a few levels.
Not having TV cable and not being into pop music means I wouldn’t be likely to be watching “America’s Got Talent.” Nor would I want to based on the snippets I’ve seen while hunting for re-runs of “The Big Bang Theory” in motel rooms. About a year ago while I was watching Sarah Bareilles do a phenomenal rendition of “Yellow Brick Road” by Elton John, an AGT video featuring Nightbirde popped up. The caption “Golden Buzzer”, repelled me like a big snake with a triangle head. Not knowing what a gilded buzzer even looks like however, stirred my curiosity and I caved.
Jane Marczewski, though only thirty years old, was a tremendously gifted source of inspiration. Not only for those dealing with aggressive cancers but also for anyone struggling each morning to put one foot in front of the other. I don’t remember seeing a more heartfelt performance in a long time. I believe her story and original song were genuine and subsequent interviews have convinced me that she’s “the real deal”.
I have to remind myself on a regular basis that categorically rejecting anything or anyone, comes with unknown costs.
Can any of my readers recount seeing or hearing performances where complete silence, or a roar from the crowd, were both appropriate responses?
I have only seen YouTube videos, but I also remember Susan Boyle's. I only listen to music in my car, the same recycled play list 🤣
