Sometimes, when there’s a storm brewing on the horizon, it’s better to batten down the hatches and pull the anchor so you’re most able to ride with the storm. You basically have to resign yourself to going wherever the fresh gales take you. A person near and dear to me is just entering such rough waters and the least I can do is focus on her needs, as she’s been doing for me for more than four decades now.
Though I may still do a little writing on occasion, my priorities have certainly shifted for the foreseeable future. Maybe the ship of perpetual division will somehow right itself. That becomes ever more likely when a critical mass of us takes a deep dive to sort out whether we are adding to, or subtracting from that division - via our thoughts, words, or actions.
I greatly appreciate you all being here and wish you well until we meet again. Best to each one of you - Mark
You are a good partner. I sent this to Em this morning. I saw a lot of beautiful poetry made into music last night. It was powerful and moving. Here is one of my favorites and thought you would like it... When despair for the world grows in me
And I wake in then night at the least sound
In fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go down and lie down where the wood drake
Rests in his beauty on the water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
Waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.
Wendell Berry
There’s a strange calm in letting the waves take you where you’re going. A peace that lifts and cushions the reefs letting you both pass over them gratefully. I wish you both strength.
