"Everything I Think I Know - I Think"
My take on a very poignant tune by singer-songwriter David Wilcox, ©2018
Do you ever wonder - when you get to the pearly gates and all the stats have been tallied, will they add up in your favor? Surely, one of the lowest bars for entrance that I could conceive of would be something like - “As you look back on your life, were you right more times than you were wrong?” I personally am a little nervous.
The other day as I was leaving a local convenience store with a mug of coffee in one hand and a muffin in the other, a roughly nine-year-old girl and her father were squabbling in front of me as they grabbed at the glass door handle. The domineering, “bad-father-figure” prevailed, and his daughter stormed off. His trailing arm held the door open for me. As they walked off, I could just barely hear her as she turned to her dad - “I, wanted to hold the door for him.”
There was no “bad-father-figure” here, just a misunderstanding between a kind man and a daughter he had nurtured so well. How many other times had I seen and judged people, for lack of an explanation?
David Wilcox is as talented a musician as he is a lyricist. He’s a master of open tunings and his acoustic guitar playing never disappoints. In this particular song - Everything I Think I Know, I Think - he weaves reality with humility to acknowledge our flawed belief systems.
. . . Tit for Tat, turns to hate,
fallacies accumulate,
And anger hides the facts that I lack.
I push away the doubt I feel,
prepared to die for some ideal
Sayin’ stuff, I can’t take back
Speedin’ up my heart attack . . . .
Please do check out this clever and thought-provoking song. Maybe you’ll join me in applying his strategy the next time we encounter the brick walls of doubt.
I've been guilty of prejudging people or making assumptions based on appearances. Much less so, now that I'm older. Thoughtful piece, Mark. Thanks for the tune also.
I like David Wilcox.
